What is Fat Transfer and Injections?

Fat transfer and injections are a natural way to reduce wrinkles and lines, rejuvenate your appearance and achieve a smoother complexion. Fat transfer is also known as fat grafting because it takes fat from other areas of the body and places it in areas that have lost volume. The fat grafting procedure will generally use liposuction as a tool to remove fat from a donor area and then injections to replace the fat in a more desired area. Fat transfer or fat grafting can be used to fill areas of the face as well as butt lifts and breast augmentation.

Additional FAQs About Fat Transfer and Injections

As with any form of surgery, fat grafting surgery is associated with some potential risks. These include, but are not limited to, adverse reaction to anesthesia, changes in sensation, scarring, allergic reactions, and infection.
This procedure is a two-step process. The first step is to remove the fat from a donor area via liposuction. The fat is then cleansed and prepared for injection into the recipient area.
Following your fat transfer and injections procedure, you may be required to wear special support garments to help minimize swelling and support healing. You will most likely be able to return to activities within a few days, though it may take a few weeks for the body to fully recover. Pain medication can be used to control discomfort. It is important to follow all patient care instructions provided by your surgeon to ensure a quick and safe recovery and see the results that you desire.
Since the procedure is a two-step process, the results are also seen in two steps. The results of the area that was filled (or the recipient area) will show the outcome immediately. There may be minor swelling to that area, but it will subside in a day or two. The results of the liposuction from the donor area may take slightly longer to realize. Due to the more invasive nature of liposuction, this area will experience a bit more swelling and minor bruising. Results may take two to three weeks to be fully noticeable.

This procedure may not be 100% effective as the transferred fat must survive in the selected area. The success of fat grafting depends on many factors, such as the location of the injection and the blood supply of the area that’s being injected. In general, about 70% percent of the fat injected during any fat transfer procedure will survive, while the rest will be harmlessly and naturally metabolized by the body.
