Myth #1: Any Plastic Surgeon Can Perform Breast Augmentation
Plastic surgeons receive additional education in cosmetic and reconstructive procedures for the face and body. Many plastic surgeons also maintain board-certification to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to quality care and continuing education and training. This does not necessarily mean that any plastic surgeon can perform breast augmentation that meets patient expectations. If you are considering breast augmentation, look for the following:
- Experience with breast augmentation surgery, including more complex cases
- Before and after photos of the surgeon’s recent breast augmentation patients
- Willingness to collaborate with you on your breast surgery goals (i.e., not “one size fits all”)
- Specialized training or education in breast procedures, both cosmetic and reconstructive
- Patient reviews on the surgeon’s website or other resources on the internet
Myth #2: Having Breast Augmentation When Breastfeeding is Dangerous
Having breast implants does not interfere with breastfeeding nor place your baby at risk. The ducts in the breasts that are used for milk are not affected by the procedure. Another concern is that the silicone of the implant could leak into the milk. Due to the natural design of female anatomy and placement of the implants, this is highly unlikely. What may occur, though, is that the placement of the incision for your surgery could impact how well you can supply milk to your baby, especially if the incision is made around the areola.
Myth #3: Breast Implants Must Be Replaced Every 10 Years
The myth that breast implants need to be replaced every 10 years stems from a report by the Food and Drug Administration, and it is often taken out of context. The report noted that many women replaced their silicone implants after 10 years, but this included women who changed their implants for personal reasons rather than simply for a safety concern or rupture. Today’s implants are designed with safety and personal satisfaction in mind. Women can have the same implants for their entire lifetimes, or they may choose to change out their implants for other reasons.
