More About Dr. William Vinyard

While taking his first courses at Maple Woods Community College in his home town of Kansas City, Missouri, his biology professor acquired an interest in his ability to work with his hands. She began providing him with various resources to determine his level of interest in the medical field. She arranged an opportunity for him to observe a plastic surgeon operate, and since that day he has been focused on his surgical career.

Dr. Vinyard continued his undergraduate education at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. During this time, he was awarded membership into the Golden Key National Honor Society. Knowing he wanted to pursue a surgical career, he felt it imperative to learn as much as he could about the Health Care profession. While keeping up with a full time course schedule in Lawrence, Kansas, he made time to work as a Phlebotomist, an ECG technician and an Emergency Room Health Care Assistant at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. Dr. Vinyard also offered complimentary tutoring for several classes that he attended. In 1997, he graduated with Departmental Honors in Human Biology.

He spent the next four years in medical school at the University of Kansas, School of Medicine. In 1998, during his freshman year in medical school, he founded the Student Organization for Surgery. This organization was created by Dr. Vinyard to offer resources dedicated to the promotion of surgery as a career. Through this organization, he was able to develop several philanthropic events and a suture clinic that instructs hundreds of future physicians each year on the basics of proper suturing techniques. In 1999, he became a Volunteer Course Tutor in the Department of Physiology and Department of Anatomy and was nominated by his peers for the Student Leadership Award. In 2002, Dr. Vinyard was nominated for the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. When Dr. Vinyard received his Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, he was awarded the Dr. Thomas G. Orr Award for The Outstanding Student in Surgery.

I  visited with several Plastic Surgeons and though they were all excellent surgeons, I decided that Dr. Vinyard was the best candidate. On my initial visit, Dr. Vinyard spent a lot of time educating my husband and myself on each procedure, we talked about the different methods/techniques available and their results, what to expect the day of surgery, the days to follow as well as and months and years to follow. I believe I went into the venture with my eyes wide open and with reasonable expectations (as I am 56, had been overweight most of my like but had recently lost 70 pounds, and had three very large babies). Dr. Vinyard’s education, knowledge and skillful hands exceeded my expectations!!

There are several pathways in which one can become a Plastic Surgeon after medical school. Dr. Vinyard intentionally chose the longest and most thorough path. He spent the next five years of his life as a General Surgery Resident at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. During that time, he received training in Trauma Surgery, Critical Care, Transplant Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Robotic Surgery, Laparoscopic Surgery, Endoscopy, Burn Management and Surgical Oncology. He also became a Student Course Instructor and ultimately an Instructor Course Instructor for Advanced Trauma Life Support classes. Dr. Vinyard feels that this extensive prior training was invaluable to his Plastic Surgery Practice.

After becoming a General Surgeon in 2007, Dr. Vinyard was accepted into a highly sought after Plastic Surgery Residency at the University of California-Davis in Sacramento, California. Under the guidance of the Chief of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Thomas Stevenson, he received training in Facial Reconstruction, Breast Reconstruction, Chest Wall Reconstruction, Abdominal Wall Reconstruction, Upper Extremity and Lower Extremity Reconstruction, Skin Cancer Management and Cosmetic Surgery. In addition, he received training in repair of Pediatric Congenital Abnormalities including Cleft Lip, Cleft Palate and Cranial Synostosis. In 2008, he went on a mission trip with his Pediatric Plastic Surgery mentor, Dr. Granger Wong, to Timor, Indonesia where they performed several Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate surgeries at the Kupang Hospital and Trauma Center. With the assistance of his Residency Program Director, Dr. Michael Wong, they developed a new photographic standard for imaging patients after massive weight loss. Dr. Vinyard presented their work at The California Society of Plastic Surgeons and The Rocky Mountain Association of Plastic Surgeons joint meeting in 2008 and was awarded the J.K. Hardesty Award for The Best Resident Paper. In 2009, Dr. Vinyard completed his required training and became a Plastic Surgeon.

Although he had developed the surgical skills needed to begin his plastic surgery practice, he still felt there was more that he could learn. With the desire to perfect his technical skills and surgical judgment in the area of Cosmetic Plastic Surgery, he sought additional training from a world recognized leader in plastic surgery, Dr. James Grotting. In 2009, Dr. Vinyard moved to Birmingham, Alabama with his wife and two children. He spent the next year in an Advanced Breast and Aesthetic Surgery Fellowship. Under the tutelage of Dr. Grotting, he learned the latest techniques in Breast Reconstruction, Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, Breast Reduction using the Superior-Pedicle Sculpted Pillar Technique, Treatment of Gynecomastia, Endoscopic Brow Lift, Face Lift, Mini-Face Lift, Rhinoplasty, Blepharoplasty, Otoplasty, Abdominoplasty, Brachioplasty, Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction, Lower Body Lift, and the non-surgical cosmetic procedures such as Botox Cosmetic Injection, Dermal Filler Injections, Laser Facial Resurfacing and Skin Care Assessment and Management.

After completing his required Surgical Training and Advanced Fellowship, Dr. Vinyard began his search for the right location to begin his Plastic Surgery Practice. He spent considerable time and effort in evaluating several options around the country. By chance, he came across an opportunity in Lake Guntersville, Alabama. Although, neither he nor his wife grew up in a small town, they fell in love with the friendly family-oriented nature of the town’s people and the peaceful beauty the lake environment provides. Ever since Dr. Vinyard was drawn to the field of Plastic Surgery, he has been planning his future practice. This opportunity with Marshall Medical Centers allowed him to start a Plastic Surgery Program from the ground up. It has always been a dream for Dr. Vinyard to create a practice that caters to his patients’ needs and desires and ultimately exceeds their expectations. The beauty and privacy that surrounds Lake Guntersville was a perfect match for Dr. Vinyard’s practice, the Vinyard Institute of Plastic Surgery. With the shared goal of bringing Plastic Surgery Services to Marshall County and Marshall Medical Centers, Dr. Vinyard opened the practice in 2010. He subsequently became Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery on his first attempt. He also became a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the American College of Surgeons (ACS), and the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (SESPRS). Although the practice was growing, the population size was not large enough to support a plastic surgery practice long-term.

It has been a lifelong dream of Dr. Vinyard’s to live near the warm Atlantic Ocean and pursue his other passion of scuba diving. Both Dr. Vinyard and his wife are currently Rescue Diver Certified and have their sights on becoming a Master Scuba Diver. They would like to raise their children in Southeast Florida where they can share with them their love for the ocean and its marine life. Dr. Vinyard was honored to have the opportunity to relocate to Palm Beach County and join the well-known and respected physicians at Plastic Surgery of Palm Beach.
